Flowering Houseplant Webinar Outline

Introductions:

Hello my name is Taylor Pochron and I’m a houseplant enthusiast located in San Francisco. Working in our stores I will often hear “…but does it flower?” among many other care questions. So, I am happy to present this approachable Sloat Garden’s Webinar on plants that bloom indoors.

Fertilizing for flowers:

An always important discussion on fertilizer options.
Understanding N-P-K on a cellular level.
Answering, “What numbers make them bloom?”

Flowering Plant Showcase:

The majority of this webinar is a showcase of flowering houseplant pictures that I’ve taken over the years. My presentation is organized based on questions I’m asked in the store, and how I would help the guest. I’ll try to impart some of my knowledge and experience with each one; and no matter what, I hope you enjoy some pretty flowers. 😀

Where are your flowering houseplants?

Orchids: A widely diverse family of plants with so much blooming potential.
Bromeliads: Interesting life cycle for being a monocarpic plant.
Anthuriums: Long lasting and waxy flowers called spathes.
Begonia: Striking foliage with amazing blooms, but can be tricky to care for.

Do those plants even flower?

Dracaenas: Although rare, it’s kinda exciting to see them flower.
Calatheas: Cool blooms, but grown for the amazing foliage. Can be difficult to care for.
Hoyas: Waxy cluster of flowers forming on a very sturdy vine.

Is that even a houseplant?

Temporary Houseplants: Discussing expectations around seasonal indoor color.
Blooming Bulbs: Fun options for showy flowers you can grow quickly.

What plant would you pick for a friend?

Nematanthus (goldfish plant): My favorite plant to gift, I love its leaves and cute flowers.
Aeschynanthus (Lipstick Plant): Easy to grow vine with beautiful flower interest.
