This is the first styling of a portulacaria afra pre-bonsai that was initially a branch cut off of a larger tree. About 5 years ago, I stuck it in a shallow pot and let the roots grow out of the pot and into the ground. This allowed the trunk to thicken quickly, but I didn't do tons of maintenance on it, so it started to lose its shape. I decided to trim it back last fall so it could begin its journey toward becoming a bonsai.
