Real-time strategy (RTS) games have been around for a long time, enjoying massive popularity at times – but is the party over? Triple A studios don’t really touch the genre any more, and some of its most successful crowd funded launches have been massive disappointments.

In trying to answer this question, we look at other genres which have faced the same challenge for relevance. Some have adapted and remained popular (FPS), others have largely died off (Adventure Games, Side-scrolling Platformers). I think we can take some lessons from these, and make some predictions about the future of RTS…
