Funeka Soldaat is the founder of FreeGender [www.freegender.wordpress.com]. She is an activist and community leader with a powerful personal story which was captured by the Leap of Faith team. Leaving the rural village where she grew up Funeka hoped that by coming to Cape Town she would encounter a more receptive attitude towards her choice to live as a lesbian. It was not to be, and over the next three decades she has survived prejudice, taunts, discrimination, physical attacks as well as rape. She would not be cowered, however, and through it all has been an outspoken activist and lobbyist for the rights of gay and lesbian people as well as human rights and community issues in general. She is a powerful voice speaking out about her own experience, prejudice, injustice and the ongoing personal danger facing countless lesbians living in South Africa's townships and informal settlments. ABOUT THE SERIES: I Am Woman - Leap of Faith is a 26 part weekly television series commissioned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation. It features the lives and leaps of 26 extraordinary women. Journeyer Lisa Chait, founder of www.lifestories.co.za, travels across the country to explore the major shifts and decisions in women's lives.

The series, which will be broadcast weekly at 09h00 on SABC3 from April 1st 2012, is a celebration of life's journey, of the turning points in women's lives and the choices we make hoping, though never certain, what the outcome will be.
