The rut is underway, and that’s when male bison get particularly ornery!

“The rut, or mating, season lasts from late June through early September with peak activity in July and August. At this time, the older bulls rejoin the herd and fight each other for breeding rights. The herd is very restless during the rut and this is when they are most dangerous,” the NPS states.

Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota issued some helpful reminders to keep people safe this season (some of them are kind of obvious but, hey, we’ve seen people do some incredibly dangerous things around the 2,000 pound mammals):

↟ Observe from a distance
↟ Use binoculars or a spotting scope
↟ Resist the temptation to pet them
↟ Take only photos and memories – leave no trace of your visit
