Plastic Pollution is one of the most urgent and serious environmental issues of our time and this requires a global coordinated action, that is multifocus, multifaceted and multifunctional involving all stakeholders. While a number of initiatives and activities exist at the international level that address the plastic waste problem and to eliminate plastic litter entering the oceans, these lack globally binding targets. It is in this context that the Ministerial Conference on marine litter and plastic pollution saw the introduction of a revolutionary resolution recommending a legally binding global mechanism to address plastic pollution. An indicator that countries are looking at a wider canvas, moving beyond marine litter, to look at the entire lifecycle of plastics.
