Michaels rock/Mikes rock reef...... Is a small island like peninsula protruding from the island of Guanaja.on its' west side. This shallow onshore dive site is where many new visitors to the island begin their dives to adjust their equipment and camera gear in preparation for the islands deeper reefs. This is a 60 minute video unedited except for a few video hiccups in order to give the viewer a good understanding of this nearshore habitat. When this video was recorded the coral appeared to be in relatively good health for a reef so close to the land. A few coral diseases are present as well as an abundance of algae. The Bay Islands are fairly close to one of the largest farming areas on the Caribbean side of Central America. The runoff from this area raises the nutrient levels found on the coral reefs of the Bay Islands. Corals require nutrient free water in which to flourish.
