During the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima, a Japanese soldier named Private Yamamoto observed that the U.S. Marines seemed "inhuman" because they did not die like ordinary men; he witnessed six Marines charge his bunker where, despite half of them falling and one heroically absorbing a grenade blast to save his squad, they continued the assault until the position was lost. Earlier in 1942 at Guadalcanal, the Japanese were shocked when a night attack resulted in 90 Japanese deaths compared to only 12 Marines, shattering the myth that Americans were "soft" and revealing a reality where Marines were trained to never surrender, essentially combining the "Samurai Spirit" with massive American firepower. Instead of relying solely on suicidal charges, the Marines utilized "industrial destruction" by systematically calling in artillery, tanks, and battleships to level their targets, advancing relentlessly even through heavy fire and replacing fallen specialists like flamethrower operators instantly to ensure the attack never stopped. After 36 days of brutal combat that left 26,000 Marines as casualties and 21,000 Japanese dead, Yamamoto’s final diary entry noted that they were like samurai with swords fighting against machine guns held by men who also possessed a samurai's heart, concluding that the Marines weren't literal monsters, but rather the perfection of industrial-scale warfare.
