‘Over 25 Dead Bodies Per Day’: Deadly Heatwave In UP’s Ballia | Article 14

As climate change fuels record land and sea temperatures across the world in 2023, we report from Uttar Pradesh, where 80 people died between June 15 and June 20 in the only government hospital in the town of Ballia. The deaths were attributed to a heatwave that swept north India, with temperatures reaching 45° C. Dr Diwakar Singh, chief medical superintendent of the hospital, blamed the heatwave, but the state govt said there was no connection between the deaths and the heat. Singh was transferred for his “careless statement”. Scientists warn of more intense heat, even unlivable conditions, in north India, as the Earth warms.
