In this engaging and practical presentation, Estelle Macdonald (New Zealand) explores how Schema Therapy and EMDR Therapy can be effectively integrated to support children and adolescents struggling with trauma, anxiety, and early maladaptive patterns. The session highlights key similarities and differences between both approaches — from Schema Therapy’s focus on unmet needs, modes, and reparenting to EMDR’s structured, bilateral stimulation–based processing of traumatic memories.

Drawing on clinical experience, the speaker demonstrates when and how to combine the two models, adapting EMDR’s eight-phase protocol with Schema Therapy’s experiential and relational techniques. Special attention is given to developmentally sensitive adaptations, including play-based methods, storytelling, and imagery rescripting to enhance safety, engagement, and healing. A detailed case example illustrates how these methods can reduce distress and strengthen emotional resilience in young clients.
