The Acholi are a Luo Nilotic ethnic group primarily living in northern Uganda and southern Sudan. They are known for their cultural traditions, which include agriculture, pastoralism, and traditional crafts. The group has faced significant hardship due to conflict in the region, but has also preserved its identity through vibrant cultural expressions and strong community bonds. 

Geography and population

Location: The majority of Acholi people live in northern Uganda, in districts such as Agago, Amuru, Gulu, Kitgum, Lamwo, Nwoya, Pader, and Omoro. A smaller population resides in Magwi County in South Sudan.

Population: In 2014, there were an estimated 1.4 million Acholi living in Uganda. 

Culture and traditions

Lifestyle: Traditionally, they were nomadic hunters, but now are primarily farmers who cultivate crops like millet, maize, sorghum, and beans. They also raise livestock like goats, sheep, and cattle.

Social structure: The traditional household is often led by the husband, with each wife typically managing her own fields, granaries, and cooking hut.

Arts and expression: The Acholi are known for their vibrant cultural dances and proverbs.

Religion: Many are Roman Catholic, while also holding traditional beliefs.

Naming ceremonies: Special ceremonies are held to name newborns, which are based on circumstances of the birth. 

History and challenges

Conflict: The Acholi have endured a tumultuous history, including the LRA insurgency in Uganda, which led to widespread displacement and trauma.

Resilience: Despite the challenges, the Acholi have worked to preserve their cultural identity and traditions.

Economic challenges: The region has historically faced marginalization and poverty, which has been exacerbated by conflict.

Recent history: In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the Acholi suffered immensely from the civil wars.
