In April 1992, Los Angeles exploded. What began as outrage over the Rodney King verdict quickly spiraled into chaos, arson, and mob violence as leadership hesitated and law enforcement pulled back. Entire neighborhoods were left exposed. Businesses burned. Innocent people were attacked in the streets, live on television, while authority vanished.
This episode of Forgotten History examines how the LAPD beating of Rodney King, the not-guilty verdict, and a failure of political leadership combined to ignite one of the deadliest episodes of civil unrest in modern American history. From Florence and Normandie to Koreatown’s rooftop defenders, this is the story of what happens when order collapses, restraint is mistaken for virtue, and the state abandons its most basic responsibility: protecting its citizens.
Was the rage understandable? Yes.
Was the destruction inevitable? No.
And what lessons were learned… or ignored?
