The APU Symphony performed the United States premiere of this work in November 2013. The orchestra is grateful to have been personally coached on this work by Brett Dean.

"Between the spaces in the sky" was composed in memory of the British conductor Richard Hickox, who was to have conducted the world premiere of Dean's opera "Bliss" in Sydney. Originally written in 2010 for string quintet and contained in Dean's work "Epitaphs", this version for string orchestra was made in 2011.
