For a 1976 CBC Vancouver Remembrance Day (November 11) Television Special, the much loved Forces Sweetheart in the Second World War, England’s Vera Lynn, sang three of her many hits: Wishing, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and White Cliffs of Dover to an appreciative audience of Vancouver’s WW11 veterans. Her 1952 hit Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart was the very first British record to top the US charts and remained for 9 weeks. In 2009 at age 92, she became the oldest living artist to make it to #1 on the British album charts with We’ll Meet Again – The Very Best of Vera Lynn. In 2016 at age 99, Dame Vera was appointed Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in Queen Elizabeth's Birthday Honours for services to Entertainment and Charity. On March 20 2017, Vera will be 100 years old.
