I realised recently that despite I've been using all of these for a long while I have never compared them so I made this quick reference video just for myself. Maybe it can be useful to someone else, too.

For my surprise, the tones ended to be quite similar but they weren't intentionally matched at all, the knobs stay where they just were set during the last use. I guess, I just chase the same sound regardless of the actual unit.

As for a conclusion, I think all the AMT preamps did an awesome job. Wired through the same power amp / cab it is impossible to tell that they are not the real stuff. There are differences, though. P1 is a nice edge high gain monster with a just barely opened mouth here and also it is quite noisy. M1 has a darker nature, remindig me of a JCM900DR. M2 was updated and improved much I think as the noise is significantly lower and it is more versatile (2 channels, 3 different outputs). If I had to pick just one AMT preamp I think I'd go with the M2. Of course I won't and keep using all 3 of them as well as the real SL-X amp that I completely love, too.

About the signal chain: The riffs were recorded DI (guitar: stock Sterling SUB AX4) then reamped. The Marshall JCM900 SL-X sample was recorded straight into its input. All AMT preamps were plugged into the FX RETURN of the JCM900 that sat on a top of a 4x12" Laney KLIPP cab sporting Celestion Greenbacks. I used a single Shure SM57 microphone into a TLA FAT2 mic preamp. I used the power amp (EL34 tubes) of the Marshall and this cab as I wanted to hear the real difference between the preamps. The DAW is Reaper. There is no EQ on the guitar tracks just a limiter on the mix (iZotope O8). There is also an Ibanez SR305DX bass through an EDEN WTDI in the mix.
