Hallstatt, the famous jewel of the Salzkammergut region, becomes strangely quiet in winter. The surface of the Hallstätter See lake sometimes freezes, reflecting the ancient wooden houses that lie close to the water's edge. People here still preserve traditional winter customs. Small Christmas markets are set up in churchyards, where people gather to drink mulled wine, enjoy baked apples and tell stories together under the white snow.
