WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Monday was a very quick hearing at the federal courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach for the man accused of wanting to kill former President Donald Trump. The hearing reportedly lasted less than ten minutes.
Right now, Ryan Wesley Routh is facing two charges, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, which allow authorities to keep him in custody. More charges are likely as investigators learn more about exactly what he was doing in the days and hours before his arrest.
Ryan Routh appeared for his initial appearance following his arrest Sunday. Reports describe him wearing a blue jail jumpsuit, his arms and legs shackled as he smiled and laughed with his court-appointed attorney Kristy Militello.
The Department of Justice confirmed Routh was armed with a loaded SKS-style rifle with a scope, two bags and a backpack when Trump’s Secret Service detail spotted him.
“There was also a GoPro on the fence there where he was intent on filming what was going on,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw
Local gun shop owner Alek Shkop showed us a similar-style rifle, an AK-47, and says the serial number is normally etched on the side of the gun.
“A normal person would never take the serial number off the gun,” said Shkop.
Shkop told CBS12 News AK-47s don’t usually come with scopes, but that someone who knows how can easily modify the weapon to add one, making it more effective from a distance.
“So, the scope is improving the shooter’s capability of being more accurate at a longer distance. The gun has its own capability then the person has its own capability, so the optics increase the person’s capability to shoot at a longer distance.,” explained Shkop.
Routh is a convicted felon so simply having a gun is a federal crime. The fact the serial number had been eliminated to make the weapon untraceable is also a felony offense. Together, on those charges alone, he could face up to twenty years in prison.
On Sunday, Palm Beach State Attorney Dave Aronberg said the suspect could be facing multiple charges from his office, but Monday morning, he told CBS12 News this case has federal jurisdiction. A short time later, Governor DeSantis told reporters in Orlando, state charges may be coming.
As for Routh, he is expected back in court for a bail hearing next Monday and an arraignment in two weeks.
