Описание к видео What type of palette is right for you? 🎨

Here’s your ultimate guide to which type of oil painting palette is right for you!

Follow me for more art tips & please consider buying me a ☕️ (link in bio) to help support videos like this - creators don’t get payed from social media platforms in canada like they do in other countries!!

🚮 When I started oil painting I used DISPOSABLE palettes which don’t require clean up & come in all sorts of shapes & sizes. I still recommend them for student or beginner painters who don’t have a permanent painting set up or who are intimidated by the clean up but as you can imagine they’re very wasteful.

💎 That’s why I switched to using a GlASS palette. Glass is the best overall surface for artists who want a big surface to mix colours that’s easy to clean. You can just scrape off the paint with a razor & wipe with a little solvent. The main downside is that glass is heavy & some artists like to rest their palettes on their arm as they paint.

✨Btw If a glass palette isn’t affordable a little hack is to use a glass chopping board or any tempered glass like a picture frame with some grey paper underneath. ✨

🪵 I’ve just got this WOOD palette which I’m so excited to try for the first time. Wood is solid but light so great for artists who hold their palette or who want to lean into the traditional vibe of oil painting. You can get all sorts of ergonomic shapes for left or right hand but this one is the same size and shape as my glass one as I just like a huge mixing surface. Wood has a different feel to glass, paint feels more buttery & there’s less glare from your studio lights. You can get grey wood palettes but they’re usually a warm brown tone which painters either love or hate. But the main con of wood is that it absorbs paint, stains & needs regular cleaning. The main thing is not to let paint dry on it & removing it with a plastic razor & a bit of solvent or oil. Vintage wood palettes can be so beautiful as they build up patina & gloss over the years.

What are the unusual setups you’ve seen?

The most common set up for artist palettes is to sit it on a table or hold it in your hand. But there are some unique palette setups that are pretty popular with oil painters that you may not have heard from.

⛰️If you like to paint outside I just got this Ugo plain air setup which comes with a palette built into the pochade box. You can pick the palette surface so I got a glass one which you can slide in so the palette sits right in front of your artwork & u can carry it around.

🪜 You can also use a vertical palette which I’ve seen really growing in popularity as you can view your paint mixing right next to your artwork. You mount your palette carefully on some kind of tripod, stand or easel so it’s held vertically. I’d recommend googling what it looks like. The downside is you have to be careful about stability to avoid any accidents & you can’t leave brushes or medium resting on the surface.

🪩 One of the most epic/pinterest worthy ways Artist’s set up their palette is by using an artist taboret. A taboret is a piece of studio furniture to sit next to an artist while painting that can be bought, made, or in my case ikea hacked using these Alex drawers. But it’s a great place to rest your palette on the top.
