In the 1971 John Williams composed the score to the Mark Rydell western 'The Cowboys' which starred John Wayne. This was pre-Star Wars and Jaws fame and 'The Cowboys' was Williams' 4th collaboration with the director, Mark Rydell. The score was not nominated for any awards in 72' but that year his musical contributions to the Robert Altman film 'Images' was nominated.

The movie might not be well-remembered but John Williams performed the Overture from 'The Cowboys' many times with the Boston Pops, Hollywood Bowl and other orchestras. The score is not leitmotif-oriented but contains several wonderful themes and that 'Americana' flare with hints of Copland lathered in.
