To extend a potentiometer shaft, I swaged an aluminum tube to expand it to fit over the pot's shaft. The swage was made of steel rod that I machined to the required diameter. The swage is chucked into a drill press, the tube is clamped on the table, a bit of machining oil and press the swage into the tube, expanding the tube.
