Too costly or simply no insurance protection. Other structures that could receive FEMA funding, have been labeled unsafe, and will eventually be dismantled, if repairs are more costly than the home/building is worth.
Saint Mary's Church on Liberty Street, has been privately owned for a short time period. Damage is extensive. If the tornado of July 16th, were a few seconds longer, the walls definitely would have caved-in.
The wood beams of the roof are massive, and very heavy. Lot of weight the walls were supporting. And the steeple(I believe) crashed onto the roof, imploding into the former church. Definitely one of my favorite structures in Rome, NY. Unknown if the current owners will build again, or if the empty lot will be for sale. Hopefully not a location for a future car wash, car dealer, pharmacy, pizza shop, credit union, or convenience store. Copper City, is saturated with that crap. I was thinking a deconstructive architecture of a four or six story building, with multiple business rental space.
Oh. One more thing: There is a very open door, in back of the church, behind the Kabari Wellness building(former BOCES). Doctor Kingsley Kabari, purchased the church from the Diocese of Syracuse, New York, in 2022. Anyway. I'll re-check it tonight, to make sure the perimeter is secure. Where there is opportunity, there is the criminal element.
