What makes an animated film "animated"? Why don't we consider James Cameron's Avatar films to be animated if most of the film is CGI? And also… who cares? Let's discuss.

Not only will we discuss the sublte differences between the two different animation pipelines, but thanks to thr power of Rokoko, I also demonstrate the pipelines myself. We will create the same animation two different ways: once with traditional 3D animation, the other with performance capture. Plus there’s a funny clip from the Oscar’s in this one.

From Mufasa, The Lion King, Planet of the Apes, and Avatar, to Rango, The Bad Guys & The Polar Express - each film uses a pipeline with very little differences from each other, and should be acknowledged as an animated production. Animation is a medium, not a genre, and if more adults took this art form seriously, they could see how these stories deserve to be taken seriously.
