Magnet specifications are rather vague and even magnets from the same batch may have very different properties.
For the base magnets of a levitation device, a simple measurement of the far field has proven to be enough. But, for the spinning top, it is very important to also know the magnitude of the parasitic horizontal component of the magnetic moment. This component is crucial in order to drive the top by an AC field, if we wish perpetual levitation.
A vector magnetometer can be very helpful for those measurements.
In this video I show how to build and use a simple, low cost vector magnetometer.
