Maui turned his brothers into birds to keep watch while he attempted to steal immortality. When Māui found Hine-nui-te-pō, she was asleep. He transformed into a tiny worm, stripped off his clothes, and began crawling inside her body, aiming to reach her heart and take the secret. However, one of his bird brothers couldn’t contain his laughter at the bizarre sight. His loud chirp woke the goddess. Furious, she crushed Māui with the sharp obsidian teeth inside her body, killing him instantly. And that’s how Māui, the hero who sought immortality, met his end.
