Thousands of demonstrators flooded Foley Square in lower Manhattan Friday evening, joining a nationwide “National Shutdown” / “ICE Out” protest against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.

Organizers called for a general strike — “no work, no school, no shopping” — urging people across the country to walk out of daily routines in opposition to what they describe as violent, unjust deportation operations and recent fatal shootings by federal agents.

Standing amid a sea of banners and hand-painted signs reading “Abolish ICE” and “ICE Out of Everywhere,” crowds of all ages braved freezing temperatures to hear speakers denounce federal immigration tactics. Protesters marched through Manhattan, halting traffic and chanting in unison about immigrant rights and systemic reform.

The demonstrations were part of a broad wave of actions nationwide — from Minneapolis to Los Angeles — sparked in large part by public outrage over the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this month. Protesters across the nation have linked these incidents to what they see as a broader pattern of aggressive immigration enforcement.

At Foley Square, speakers representing immigrant advocacy groups and grassroots coalitions urged sustained activism. The rally’s tone was defiant yet peaceful, with chants echoing across the open plaza near City Hall late into the evening. Community leaders emphasized solidarity with immigrant families and condemned what they described as historically disproportionate federal force.
