The new Isuzu D-Max XTR is a car that to me is specialist, in the sense that it isn't a car for everyone or every road terrain for that matter. On the normal roads, it requires extra care and attention, off road, it comes to life but lacks the power and performance to make it as fun as it could have been.
When you have a car like the XTR and you want to make it attractive to potential buyers, what do you do? you slap some new model on it, the XTR. It has that green styling all around the car, like the badge and even the headrests and when you start up the engine, the multimedia player shows it as well. Besides that, it's all about work. It has all the spaces to put all the work tools you have, but you do compromise on the back pickup/boot space with the ready-made compartments preinstalled for you which you can lock your tools in for example.
You have flared wheel arches, heavy-duty, chunky 17 inch wheels that look and feels mean and it's 250mm higher than the regular D-Max. Getting in, you have the side steps to help you with hand bars inside as well to assist with getting out. On the back you have some fake exhaust silver outline and you can see some more green XTR styling underneath, on the suspensions. One thing I do love about the D-Max XTR is visibility, it doesn't lack at all and you can easily see everything even as big as it is and the mirrors complement it well. You have a reverse camera to also assist with backing in and out of spaces.
On the inside, everything feels very raw and in fact, if you took out the Pioneer touchscreen infotainment system in there, it could be a pickup truck ready for the safari. If feels bare-boned, yet you have some tech in there like the reverse camera, the 7 inch infotainment system with a sound system with eight speakers that are subpar, steering wheel controls, some extra compartments to put thing and I was pleasantly surprised to see a button for the heated seats and you have a dial for activating different off-roading modes. There's no push to start button so it's old school and nothing fancy there. There's also plenty of leg and head room as you'd expect, both for the drivers and passengers.
Where it disappoints a little for me is the engine, where you have a 1.9 liter four cylinder diesel-powered engine producing 161 bhp and 255lb ft. It's very excellent on fuel and I imagine the people that will buy this would only worry about fuel consumption and just getting from A to B. Having said that, it's still powerful enough to tow up to 3500kg and maximum payload of 1136kg. It's cheaper compared to the Ford Range Raptor and even from a tax and expenses point of view for businesses looking to get the D-Max XTR on their fleet.
On normal roads, it's comfortable on the motorway, it's smooth, it's not bouncy for a pick up truck, but when you get in the city, turning can feel like a chore and you have to pay extra attention to your surroundings, but visibility is great for that. Although I wasn't insured or had the opportunity to take it proper Off-roading, it handles rough terrains like nothing, the Pirelli Scorpions which comes as standard added to its grip with higher ground clearance and variable hill-descent control. Overall, it's an interesting pick-up truck, it's definitely one for the workforce and perhaps still not for those that would go for a Land Rover discovery for the extra tech and plush feels, but you'd be paying more for those.
