Decentraland (MANA) is a virtual reality platform, where users are able to create, experience, and monetize content and applications. On the surface, it kind of looks like Minecraft, but behind the scenes it’s quite different. Dencentraland is based on the ethereum blockchain, a technology which allows it to be a decentralized platform. This is one of the factors that makes it different to Minecraft, which is centralized and run by an individual body.

Decentraland, like other games and virtual reality platforms, allows you to explore and interact with other users from around the world and be immersed in the experiences within the platform. What makes the project special is the blockchain technology, which facilitates everything that happens within the platform such as land purchases and transactions made by users on the platform.
The goal of Decentraland is to create a publicly accessible system for users to build whatever they want within this decentralized virtual space, whether it be virtual stores, online casinos, social media platforms, or anything else you can imagine. You can create an avatar on Decentraland and then you can sell it or give it away to another user. If you purchase land, you can rent it to other users for a fee. This is an example of how it is monetizable and in effect, the assets within Decentraland hold value just like a car or house in your real life might.
What can you do in Decentraland?
You can meet people, dating on Decentraland is even becoming a thing. You can buy and sell things, for example, if you created a piece of art, you could sell that in Decentraland as an NFT. You can vote on how the world is built, voting power being determined based on the MANA (the crypto behind the Decentraland) and LAND (an NFT representing land on Decentraland) that you hold in your wallet. The virtual reality is effectively democratized.
What’s the point of decentralizing Virtual Reality? What was wrong with minecraft?
Benefits of a decentralized VR.
Freedom & Ownership
In Decentraland's space, users own their digital assets which means they can do what they want with them, such as trading them or selling them or simply keeping them. ownership of digital assets without having to worry about a centralized company taking control of it all or charging a hefty price for items. In other words, Decentraland democratizes virtual reality by making its usage accessible to everyone while also ensuring that people have full ownership over their creations.
Privacy
On Decentraland, you have complete freedom over your experience—no one else can control what you're doing inside of VR. Compared to the metaverse, which is still very dependent on centralized servers and technologies.
Is Decentraland the same as the metaverse?
Since the metaverse is still a concept rather than an actuality at this stage, it’s open to interpretation. There is no definition as to what the metaverse is, but it could be said that Decentraland and other VR platforms such as Enjin and Sandbox are arguably a type of “metaverse” project, and are part of the evolving concept and conversation.
A key difference of decentralized “metaverse” projects is that the metaverse that say, Mark Zuckerberg envisions, would likely be based on a centralized server system. This means that the entirety of the virtual world exists online via a single computer system. Decentraland, on the other hand, is based on a distributed ledger system, meaning that it uses blockchain technology to store information on a network of decentralized computers rather than one sole server. This allows for better security, reliable data storage and the ability to censor or dictate what users can and can’t do or say is removed.
Decentraland is a young project, and there’s no doubt a lot more to come. Developers, artists and content creators are increasingly getting involved in the project and this is contributing to its evolution at a rapid pace, and with the metaverse concept becoming more and more popular, and crypto becoming more widely understood, it’s possible that a project like Decentraland could take off and achieve mass adoption.
