Gopalakrishna Bharathi is one of the earliest Carnatic music stars of whose life we have full details. This talk will highlight what it was to a performing artiste in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and what lessons it holds for the Carnatic Music world of today.

Sriram Venkatakrishnan is a music historian, heritage activist and columnist. He pioneered the concept of heritage walks in Chennai in 1999, when he led a heritage walk in Mylapore. Since then, his monthly heritage tours in different areas of the city and his quarterly heritage tours in other parts of India have attracted a wide audience. Sriram is a regular columnist with The Hindu and is Associate Writer of Madras Musings. He is currently one of the four Secretaries of the Music Academy, Madras. Sriram's blog Madras Heritage and Carnatic Music is a popular site for trivia on the two subjects that he writes on. Sriram is a popular invited speaker on the subjects of music history and heritage.
