Video transcript:
Hi, I’m Felicia Williams. I will like to share little background about myself. At age three, I attended deaf institution in NJ, New Jersey School for the Deaf. Few years later, I decided to go to mainstreamed school and as the time goes on, I decided to come back to deaf school and graduated there. After graduating in 2005, I went to community college, majored in Deaf Studies. With the Deaf Studies degree, I started to examine more about deaf culture, history, language, and linguistics, but I was not quite satisfied with the field of Deaf Studies. I continued my studies at Gallaudet University with my Bachelor’s degree in ASL with minors of Deaf Studies and Linguistics. After graduating in 2012, I was passionate to master my teaching skills, I decided to study for Master’s in Sign Language Teaching known as Master’s in Sign Language Education. Currently I am full-time faculty for the Department of ASL/Deaf Studies, at Gallaudet University. My favorite activities are shopping, chatting with friends, exploring my research ideas, what my concentration in PhD will be in. My biggest goal is to obtain PhD degree in the future, that include intersectionality, diversity, Black Deaf communities that consists of culture, language, and history. There’s critical need of more research about Black Deaf communities. I’m the first recipient of Dr. Nathie Marbury award in 2013. It was a great honor to receive the award, and Nathie’s passion to teach ASL has inspired me as well. I hope the inspiration will immensely spread out for others, too.
