In 305 AD, Roman Emperor Diocletian did something unique: he retired. He started making plans ten years earlier, and built himself a combination retirement villa and fortress, sited on a harbor in what is now Split, Croatia. Much of the establishment still stands; it has mostly been inhabited since just after his death, and has survived numerous wars as well as the ravages of time. Come meet the man, learn a little bit about his remarkable life, and see his glorious retirement home, to which he retired, as he told a friend, to raise cabbages!
