The Expert Heartside serves as the culmination of 29 maps, fusing how they look, how they play, and their vibes into one cohesive product. It's also by far the most cinematic and lore-heavy, featuring a multi-room ending in which Madeline does, indeed, fucking die. Every room has an involved transition, showing just how much work went into making this heartside. It cannot be overstated how integral Butcherberries was in the development; it wouldn't be nearly as cool as it was without them. In the ending sequence, Madeline makes it to the center of everything and lives through the past, present, and future simultaneously and eternally. The protagonist has been subsumed into the superorganism of the universe, becoming nothing more than a speck of dust in an endless swirling supernova of stars. This sets up Grandmaster, which is set inside heaven. The much funnier and less grand / poetic interpretation of this ending is that Madeline ran out of hard maps to play on this mortal plane, so she intentionally died to beat the levels of, and violently kill, beings above. That's my headcanon, anyway: trans people can not only double jump, they can kill God himself.
