Welcome back MechanicalEI, did you know that two beams can be connected using a moment connection or a shear connection which are both internal hinges? This makes us wonder, what are beams with internal hinges? Before we jump in check out the previous part of this series to learn about what Shear force and Bending Moment are? Now, Internal hinges are used to remove any redundant or incompatible moments in a structure. Bending moment at internal hinge is always zero. An internal hinge makes the structure more flexible. It allows the structure to move which reduces reactive stresses. Internal hinges are sometimes provided to solve the problems created by the additional stresses such as settlement or temperature stresses. Loading rate as the name suggests is the speed at which you apply force to the body. Consider a simply supported beam AB carrying a uniformly distributed load with length. The load on the beam and the Shear force are related by this equation. The Moment on the beam and the shear force are related by the first derivative of Moment with respect to force x. The load and Shear force on the other hand are given by the first derivative of Shear force with respect to force x. Hence, We first saw what beams with internal hinges are and then found out what the relationship between loading rate, shear force & bending moment is?
