As promised, here's a list of sources -- right after I give you the SkillCult links:
SkillCult website: https://skillcult.com
A SkillCult ax haft oiling post (one of several, probably the one done after the one the bushcraft guy was referencing, though he didn't say): • PENETRATION - SATURATION - COATING, Oiling...
And now...This is the crucial part of any search: WHO said so?
---
First, this is one I myself discovered and have been working on. Way over my head. I have recently had Claude summarize it and translate it for me:
"Recent Research on Linseed Oil Use in Wood Protection — A Review" by D. Cirule, I. Andersone, E. Kuka, and B. Andersons Published September 5, 2024 in the journal Sci (MDPI), Vol. 6, No. 3, Article 54
The authors are all from the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry in Riga, Latvia. It's an open-access review that covers peer-reviewed research since 2000, synthesizing studies from Scopus and Web of Science databases.
The review covers surface and impregnation treatments across a wide range of wood substrates, different LO formulations (including chemically modified linseed oil), its use as a base for biofinish development, its role as a medium for thermal modification of wood, and the mechanisms behind how LO changes wood properties.
You can read and download it for free here: https://www.mdpi.com/2413-4155/6/3/54
It's published under a Creative Commons (CC BY) license, so you can share it freely as well.
