⚙️ GEAR UP FOR SPACE! 🚀 Hands-On Learning with Our Earth-Moon Model

I'm thrilled to share this brilliant piece of STEM learning created by one of our students! This little mechanical setup, sometimes called a simplified Orrery, is a perfect example of how combining Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math brings the vast universe right into our classroom.

The Mechanism Explained: Orbit in Action
This wooden model elegantly demonstrates two key concepts in celestial mechanics:

Earth's Orbit Around the Sun ☀️:

The large, central orange ball represents the Sun.

The Blue ball represents the Earth.

The main outer ring and gear mechanism cause the Earth model to travel in a path around the central Sun. This motion represents our planet completing one full year (approximately 365 days). This motion is driven by the force of gravity in the real solar system, which this mechanical model mimics with gears.

Moon's Orbit Around the Earth 🌕:

The white ball represents the Moon.

Notice how the Moon is attached to a smaller gear system orbiting the Earth. As the Earth travels around the Sun, the Moon simultaneously circles the Earth. This demonstrates that the Moon is our planet's natural satellite, taking roughly 27.3 days to complete its full orbit.

Why This is Great STEM Education
This project goes far beyond simply building a model. Our student had to:

Engineer the structure and select the right gears to ensure the orbits move smoothly.

Apply Mathematical thinking to understand how the gear ratios control the speed of the orbits.

Grasp the fundamental Scientific principle of Heliocentrism—the idea that the Earth orbits the Sun.

Use simple Technology (like laser-cut wood pieces) to create a working demonstration.
