This video was provided by UPMC Prehospital Care to provide an overview of a new handoff procedure being implemented.

UPMC Trauma Services and Emergency Medicine at UPMC Presbyterian, Mercy and Children's have implemented a new program called "the 20 Second Shout Out." Essentially, what they have identified a specific time during the patient transfer process that EMS will be asked to give critical patient information.

UPMC envisions when your crews enter the trauma room, a senior member/leader of the ED/trauma team will assess the patient's ABCs while remaining on your EMS stretcher. Once this is completed and any life threatening problems are corrected, the patient will be transferred to the hospital bed.

The ED/trauma team leader will then ask the hospital staff to be quiet so that EMS can give their 20 Second Shout Out (report). This report consists of (6) critical elements designed to aid the resuscitation team in the initial minutes of care. A poster listing the following (6) elements will be prominently displayed in the trauma rooms at each facility your crews to reference when giving their report:

The 20 Second Shout Out
1. Age, Gender, Mechanism of Injury, Time of Event
2. Prehospital Vital Signs: Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, O2 Sat, Respiratory Rate 3. Injuries
4. Prehospital Interventions
5. Changes in Patient Status: Any LOC, Hypotension?
6. Past Medical History, Allergies, Meds, Blood Thinners?

UPMC asks that all additional patient related information be conveyed to hospital staff after the "Shout Out" and in most circumstances outside of the trauma room (i.e., family information, police involvement, registration info, social worker interaction, etc.)
