The low-dust ballast train, aka SAL-train, represents a unique industry-wide initiative aimed at improving working conditions for railtrack maintenance workers.
The low-dust ballast train is fitted with a high-pressure water spraying installation, a hydraulically driven unloading system, lighting, and is remotely controlled.
The train moistens the ballast with water. This means that considerably less dust is released during unloading, which eliminates problems associated with inhalable quartz dust.
This industry-wide initiative leads to improved and safe unloading of ballast.
