247TV | Flames tore through an old building in downtown Hamilton Saturday morning causing a structural collapse that shut down the surrounding area. The Hamilton Fire Department says heavy smoke was visible when firefighters arrived at the four-storey commercial building at 206 King St. W. around 7 a.m.

Firefighters entered first floor and were confronted by “high heat,” Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe told reporters at the scene Saturday.

He said fire crews were forced to pull back and fight the blaze from defensive positions outside of the building.

“We’ve had walls on all four sides come down,” Cunliffe said, explaining one wall collapsed on a neighbouring building.

He said the flames also spread to the balcony of a unit at a neighbouring condo, but that fire was quickly doused.

“There will be a significant dollar loss from this fire,” Cunliffe said.

Area residents were warned to stay inside and keep their windows closed while firefighters battled the blaze throughout the day.

Cunliffe said roads in the surrounding area would likely remain closed into Sunday.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
