Sadie Sullivan, a lifelong Wenatchee resident and standout swimmer at Wenatchee High
School, is speaking publicly about experiences she says left her feeling “unsafe” and “on alert”
in school facilities designated for female students.

Sullivan, a four-year member of the Wenatchee High School swim team and recently committed
swim team member of Westmont College, recalls an incident that occurred during her
sophomore year. According to Sullivan, she was in the girls’ locker room preparing for swim
practice when she heard a male voice coming from within the same space. She says the
realization caused immediate distress.

“I froze,” Sullivan recalled, describing the moment as confusing and alarming. “It was the first
time I had encountered a transgender student in my locker room,” Sullivan said. She described
the locker room as a space that she had previously considered a private and secure changing
area. Sullivan contacted her parents shortly afterward, telling them she felt the situation was
urgent.

In an interview, Sullivan described the girls’ locker room as a space where “she had always felt
safe” preparing for practice without concern for her personal well-being. She said that hearing
the voice of a biological male caused her to instinctively feel the need to cover herself and
question whether the space remained safe.

Sullivan says a similar incident occurred more recently when she encountered the same
transgender student using a girl’s restroom at Wenatchee High School. She described feeling
the same sense of discomfort and disbelief, stating that the experience reinforced her concern
about the loss of female-only spaces.

As a result, Sullivan says her daily routine has changed. She reports feeling constantly on alert
and no longer able to assume that women’s restrooms or locker rooms are exclusively reserved
for biological females.

“I am a kind person. I am understanding,” Sullivan said. “But when it comes to my boundaries,
my values, and what is common sense, that’s where I draw the line. I won’t stand for it.”

Sullivan’s comments come as Washington State and the nation are dealing with questions about
what spaces remain safe for women. A nonpartisan PAC in Washington recently submitted
enough signatures to qualify their initiative to keep biological males out of women’s sports as
was intended with Title IX.
