Onimusha: Warlords Analysis | Classical Demon Folklore Explained

Tonight, we will dive into Onimusha's ties to classical Japanese demon lore. Oda Nobunaga was reborn as a demon king to feast upon the blood of Princess Yuki. This concept is undeniably paralleled by Shuten-Doji, a demon overlord of classical oni folklore, abducting maidens and feasting upon their blood. Let us examine the oni's original conception and early folktales in great detail, then proceed to analyze Onimusha's parallels to the tale of Shuten-Doji. This includes Oda Nobunaga's parallels to Shuten-Doji as WELL as Samanosuke's parallels to Minamoto no Raiko (Yorimitsu). Onimusha is essentially a revival of the prominent motifs in Shuten-Doji, which include:
