1998 Nissan Pathfinder Wheel Bearing Replacement

I had to do this job three times to get it right. First time, when I completed everything I had a vibration/noise on passenger side going around 30mph. It got more noticeable as we went faster. I figure it might be bad bearings. So, I took everything apart and replaced the wheel bearings (Timken to National) and reseated both of the races. That didn't help. The next week I decided to check for play and tightened up the bearings. That DID HELP and problem wasn't noticeable at 30MPH but was slightly above 50MPH. My FINAL attempt I decided to replace the WHEEL HUB with NEW races and reuse my original Timken bearings (after cleaning and repacking). When I removed my INITIAL races I used a brass and steel drift/punch. The brass is soft and didn't damage anything but the steel damaged inside the wheel hub. I sanded down a bit but that might have contributed to the problem. So I found used one at a local salvage yard for $35. I removed old races properly this time and reset new NATIONAL races.

To do both wheels (Brakes, rotors, new bearings and races) I would allocate a full day including clean-up. If you don't have to repack bearings or remove races AND have an impact wrench the job will go much quicker. It is not too difficult, it just takes time and is a bit messy with all the grease.

Torque:
1) Lug Nuts (21mm): 87-108ft-lbs
2) Drive Flange (13mm): 18-26ft-lbs
3) Rotor Bolts (14mm): 36-51ft-lbs
4) Caliper (12mm): 24-31ft-lbs
5) Caliper Bracket (22mm): 53-72ft-lbs
6) Wheel Bearings: 56-72ft-lbs for initial setting
6a) Then back off to 0ft-lb (turn) then 13-inch-lbs (turn) then 13-inch-lbs (turn)
6b) Install lock washer. Recommended to measure pulling force before and after.
6c) Force Difference: C = B - A = 7-20N (before and after installing lock washer)

- Alternative are National bearings or SKF
