Both sides have claimed battlefield successes, although details have been scarce so far, with Ukrainian officials releasing little information.
According to the official, Ukraine’s Armed Forces have already achieved some “tactical gains” since launching the offensive on Monday, but “we are going to have wait and see exactly how far they get and the successes they manage to achieve”.
They went on to say that the goals of the operation would likely be determined by the progress and success of it.
But the idea of the offensive including plans to retake the Crimean peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, was “not plausible”.
It is thought that Ukraine waited to reach the right concentration of forces before launching the counteroffensive, while it was also timed to avoid the winter, when, according to the official, there may be a “pause and replenishment” phase.
According to an official, Russian troops “have been making absolutely glacial progress” in the eastern separatist region of Donbas, which comprises of the self-declared People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Russia is “struggling to adapt” to Ukraine’s western-supplied long-range ammunitions, which have had a “substantial effect” in different areas and have caused “considerable dismay” among Russian armed forces. Russia was facing “very serious constraints” as it also struggled to replenish non-precision ammunition too, the official said.
As for Ukraine, the official said they could “absolutely guarantee” that the West would carry on supporting it with the supply of long-precision weapons.
Sir Stephen Lovegrove, the UK’s national security adviser, said: “Ukraine’s resistance has inspired the world and shown huge courage in the face of brutality. Now that courageous resistance has stalled the Russian advance and demonstrated the determination of the Ukrainian people and Armed Forces to retake their sovereign territory.
