GROVER WASHINGTON and FATHEAD NEWMAN : Live in PHILADELPHIA - 1999

Описание к видео GROVER WASHINGTON and FATHEAD NEWMAN : Live in PHILADELPHIA - 1999

Here we have rare performance video of Grover Washington Jr. during Labor Day weekend at the 1999 Tony Williams Scholarship Festival in Philadelphia. On December 17th of that year, at age 56, he did not survive a massive heart attack while taping "The Saturday Early Show" at the CBS Studios in New York City.

David 'Fathead' Newman, another legend, is the tenor saxophonist on this set. In 1958 his iconic alto saxophone solo on "Hard Times" was recorded during his long-time stint with Ray Charles and joyfully emanated from jukeboxes world-wide. David Newman made his transition on January 20, 2009 at age 75. http://www.davidfatheadnewman.com

The annual Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival in Philadelphia has as its namesake a jazz elder, a saxophonist who many expect to be a DRUMMER. No, this Tony Williams is not the late, great percussionist of the same name. In the clip you're watching he states the "Old Folks" melody on alto saxophone and takes the first solo followed by Fathead on tenor and Grover on soprano. Tony also appears with a 5-year-old drummer in this video from the same festival (different year):    • a FIVE-YEAR-OLD jazz drummer @ PHILLY...

Tony Williams is firmly dedicated to the key concept in his festival's identity: "Scholarship". Here's a paragraph from his web site:
~~~~~~~
"He also had a passion to 'keep jazz alive' so it was not enough for Tony just to be a professional musician. He had to give back and he did that in a way that can not be matched by many. Tony Williams started a jazz theory and music program in his school, the Ada H. Lewis Middle School Jazz Band. Not long after, he started his own jazz theory and music program that is now known as the Mount Airy Cultural Center, Inc., of which he is the founder and director."
This festival is an annual event which has taken place in Philadelphia every year since 1990. The upcoming dates are Friday August 29 through Monday September 1, 2014 (Labor Day weekend). http://www.tonywilliamssaxman.com
