The purpose of the symposium was to educate students on campus about the hardships endured by refugees and discuss how we can help. Due to war or political repression getting an education can be dangerous in some developing countries. Students are often persecuted, imprisoned or forced into exile with virtually no opportunity for post-secondary education.

Speakers were:

Lynne Leblanc, is the Manager of the WUSC's Campus Engagement Team. Her dedication for helping refugees began after a 7-month placement in refugee camps in Western Tanzania. She has since worked and volunteered using both sport and education to bridge conflicting communities and raise awareness about refugee and global issues.

Veronica Fynn, a refugee from Ghana, was supported through WUSCs SRP and is now a graduate student at Osgoode Hall Law School completing her Master of Laws. She has served as an SRP coordinator at UBC and is now serving with WUSC at York University in an advisor/leadership role.

Joseph Monywyiir, a Sudanese refugee from Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, is presently being sponsored through WUSCs SRP at York University. He is a first year student who aims to become a medical doctor.

Amy England, is the current President of the Student Association for UOIT/DC and Trent in Oshawa. She was the first female and first Durham College student to serve as the President on this campus.
