In May 2022, Satyendar Jain, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and then Delhi’s Health Minister, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on allegations of money laundering linked to purported hawala transactions. The ED’s investigation accused Jain of laundering money through four companies associated with him, amounting to approximately ₹27.7 crore. 

Following his arrest, Jain was incarcerated for over 18 months. In October 2024, a Delhi court granted him bail, citing prolonged trial delays and his extended detention. 

In February 2025, the Union Home Ministry sought and obtained President Droupadi Murmu’s sanction to prosecute Jain under Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. This development is based on the ED’s findings, which the ministry asserts provide sufficient evidence for prosecution. 

As of now, the legal proceedings against Satyendar Jain are ongoing, with the prosecution process expected to accelerate following the President’s approval.
