When Fuje Alam Bin Abdul Rahman entered his basement on a Tuesday afternoon last June, a sparking wire caught his eye. He also heard a hissing noise near some old, unused appliances. 
He’d gone down into the basement looking for children. His five kids and four others, part of a visiting family, had spent the day celebrating one of Islam’s holiest holidays. Alam thought he heard some of them playing down there. 
As he stepped closer, a spark jumped from the wire and hit his shirt, igniting it. Fire engulfed his body. 
Then his home exploded. 
That Tuesday afternoon, the house at 205 Carbon St. burst apart. It sent pieces of the house into nearby homes and a sofa onto a neighboring lawn.  
In an instant, Alam's family had to start over, again. The husband and wife fled persecution in Myanmar years ago and started a family in Malaysia. They’d arrived in Syracuse in 2022 with some treasured possessions and a dream: to get educations for their children.
“All my life,” Alam said, “I wanted to move to the U.S.”
