As part of the South Africa Site Visit 2025, I visited Freedom Park, a national heritage site dedicated to honoring South Africa’s journey toward freedom, dignity, and democracy. Freedom Park stands as a space of remembrance, healing, and reflection—memorializing those who sacrificed their lives in struggles against colonialism, apartheid, and other forms of oppression.

This visit is part of my work to develop a Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) study abroad program that centers history, memory, and leadership within global contexts. Freedom Park invites deep reflection on how nations remember the past, honor collective struggle, and shape narratives of justice and reconciliation for future generations.

For students, Freedom Park offers a powerful opportunity to engage with questions of national identity, restorative justice, and the role of education in sustaining democracy. It serves as a living classroom where history, culture, spirituality, and leadership intersect.
