Tyson's first nationally televised bout occurred on February 16, 1986, at Houston Field House in Troy, New York, against journeyman heavyweight Jesse Ferguson, broadcast by ABC Sports. In the fifth round, Tyson floored Ferguson with a brutal uppercut that shattered his nose. By the sixth round, Ferguson resorted to excessive holding and clinching to evade further damage. After repeated warnings from the referee, the fight was halted midway through the round. Initially ruled a disqualification (DQ) victory for Tyson, the decision was later changed to a technical knockout (TKO) following protests from Tyson’s corner, who argued that a DQ would disrupt his knockout streak and that a stoppage was inevitable. 
By July, Tyson had added six more knockouts to his record before facing former world title challenger Marvis Frazier in Glens Falls, New York, again on ABC Sports. Tyson dominated from the opening bell, flooring Frazier with two devastating uppercuts—the second rendering him unconscious just thirty seconds into the fight. 

Following the Frazier bout, Tyson was scheduled to fight José Ribalta at the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, later in 1986. Ribalta proved a relentless opponent, digging hard into Tyson’s body throughout the fight. Despite being knocked down three times—in the 2nd, 8th, and 10th rounds—Ribalta pushed Tyson to the limit before the referee stopped the fight. Tyson later called Ribalta his toughest opponent, stating: *"I hit Jose Ribalta with everything, and he took it all and kept coming back. He stood toe-to-toe with me, strong in the clinches. Ribalta actually engaged me—most didn’t. His body shots left me nauseous for hours after the fight. I never felt that kind of pain again."
