The history and Evolution of Scientific Calculator

2,000 BCE - The Abacus.
The first calculator was known as an abacus, a hand operated mechanical calculator that used beads and rods. It was first used by the Egyptians around 2000 BC.

1642 - Pascal's calculator.
The first mechanical calculator appeared in 1642. It was invented by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal. The device used gears and could add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

1620 - The slide rule.
The slide rule was invented around 1620–1630, shortly after John Napier's publication of the concept of the logarithm. In 1620 Edmund Gunter of Oxford developed a calculating device with a single logarithmic scale.

1673 - Stepped reckoner.
The step reckoner (or stepped reckoner) was a digital mechanical calculator invented by the German mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz around 1673 and completed in 1694.

1690 - Napier's bones.
John Napier, the inventor of logarithms, also invented this aid to calculation known as 'Napier's Bones' in 1617. The 'bones' consist of a set of rectangular rods.

1820s - Difference engine.
Difference Engine, an early calculating machine, verging on being the first computer, designed and partially built during the 1820s and '30s by Charles Babbage.

1885 - Comptometer.
The Felt and Tarrant Comptometer was invented by my great grandfather , Dorr E. Felt, in 1885 . It was the first push button calculator . The comptometer received its first patent and was put on the market in 1887.

1930s - Curta.
The Curta of Curt Herzstark (see biography of Curt Herzstark) is a remarkable mechanical calculator, based on the stepped drum mechanism of Lebnitz.

1961 - ANITA.
The first all-electronic desktop calculator was invented in 1961 in Britain by Control Systems Ltd. It was called ANITA (A New Inspiration To Arithmetic/Accounting).

1985 - Casio, graphing calculator.
The world’s first graphing calculator was invented in 1985 by Casio.

1993 - Calculators in Cell Phones.
In 1993 IBM Simon invented the Personal Communicator. It was a cell phone with an added PDA functions like email, calendar, and a calculator.

2016 - Till Today.
In the mid 2000s, many of the modern smart phones were introduced and with them came a new way of calculation. Calculators are now in every phone, every tablet, and in every app store.
