Renowned and experienced breast consultant and surgeon, Mr Nicolas Beechey-Newman, explains about the common causes of nipple discharge, nipple retraction and nipple inversion and how these signs may relate to pre-cancerous changes and possible symptoms of breast cancer.

He also introduces his one-stop breast clinic where patients can get a consultation, gold-standard triple assessment and test results all in one appointment, all on one day. Triple assessment of a breast lump can include ultrasound scan, mammogram and needle biopsy. Nipple discharge is most commonly caused by physiological changes or sterile inflammation (periductal mastitis) within the breast, however can be caused by breast cancer or pre-cancerous changes in the breast.

Mr Beechey-Newman outlines how nipple discharge can vary depending on the cause and what steps to take to get it checked. Mr Nicolas Beechey-Newman explains how nipple changes or inversion can develop, additional features to look out for and when it is important to investigate nipple inversion further as a potential sign of cancer. Having graduated from Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London in 1983, Mr Beechey-Newman is a distinguished breast surgeon who pioneered sentinel node biopsy and is a prominent figure in the field of breast duct micro-endoscopy. His specialist areas of expertise include benign breast problems, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, including surgical breast reconstruction. He also has a special interest in surgical treatment of breast cancer whilst avoiding mastectomy, and treatment of breast cancer in younger women. When he is not operating, Mr Beechey-Newman runs clinics in the Harley Street Breast Clinic at 148 Harley Street, London Bridge Hospital at the Shard and 31 Old Broad Street.
