Philip Glass: Metamorphosis I
Brooklyn Orchestra
Olivier Glissant, conductor and arranger

Both fascinated with Brazilian music, Philip Glass and Olivier Glissant met during sessions for Tico da Costa's record Lagartixa. After founding the Brooklyn Orchestra, Glissant set out to create a symphonic arrangement of Aguas da Amazonia, originally performed by Uakti on their own self-built instruments, seeking to make the work playable by any symphony orchestra. Glissant's intention was to recreate the Brazilian rhythms and feel without requiring specialty percussion or Brazilian musicians, thus expanding performance opportunities for the work.
Of "Águas da Amazônia,", which he will conduct at the MATA Festival on May 18, Olivier says: “Philip Glass created something beautiful out of very little material – an entire movement based on two notes, being expanded, and expanded, and expanded using every trick in the book. It’s just beautiful. I love how romantic this piece is, and how universal it is".
